Painting a different
picture |
A good illustration of the versatility of
Benchmark Estimating Software is its use by
Nowra based company Fine Line Painting. The
company, established 30 years ago, is a specialist
commercial painting business employing 22 people on
projects from Wollongong to Batemans Bay and west to
Goulburn.
Managing Director Norm Mogg has recently begun using
Benchmark instead of manually estimating
quotes for the many projects undertaken by Fine
Line Painting. Norm says “On large
projects in particular, Benchmark allows us to
calculate the real cost by item and then allows us
to easily calculate our overheads and profit margin.
The end result is much better cost control and more
accurate project quoting.”
Norm believes that Benchmark will prove
equally useful on small projects as well as the
larger ones. Once the library of routines is fully
built up, project estimates can be compiled in a
fraction of the time taken previously. He states,
“ Once it’s set up, anyone can measure
quantities, and then the quote is available in less
than an hour.”
An example of Benchmark’s effectiveness has
been a $500 000 painting project on a two tower
high-rise residential complex. A project of this
nature has a very large number of items such as
doors, walls, skirting boards and patching. Paint
types vary, as do painting times. Trying to use a
manual system to take all these variables into
account is time consuming and error prone. By using
Benchmark on this project, Fine Line achieved
significantly better controls by item, than would
have been the case using their previous system based
on square metre rates. The result was a much more
detailed and accurate estimate.
This experience, says Norm, leads the company to
expect all future quotes to be significantly more
accurate, leading to more reliable profit margins.
The Fine Line Painting experience
demonstrates the versatility of Benchmark
Estimating Software. Not only does the software
superbly manage the estimating for large civil
projects such as roadworks, but it is equally at
home with estimating tasks for painting and
landscaping projects, to name just two. Whether the
project is large or small, Benchmark is
ideally designed to do the job, and the reports
available will suit businesses of all types.
Norm Mogg sums up: “ Once Benchmark is set up,
anyone can measure quantities, then the quote is
available in less than an hour. As our routines have
been built up over time, I expect future quotes to
be significantly more accurate, and the cost saving
we will enjoy through reduced estimating time is
another bonus.”
